The last thing Hawke’s Bay man Pauly Douglas expected to do on a Monday morning was to stand on the side of the road, reporting a seal – which was miles from the sea – to the local council.
Douglas was on his way back from picking up work supplies, when he spotted what he thought was a dog on the side of Pakowhai Rd, near Hastings.
“He was happy enough, it looked like he was having a good look around and even waving at one point, he had his flipper out”.
Douglas said the seal, which was near the Pakowhai roundabout next to the dog park, did not appear to be worried.
Douglas said the seal was a long way from the ocean and estimated it had swum up the river and into the stream near the dog park.
